This page has images of False Heath Fritillary. With a dark upper hindwing where the black dominates and a narrow yellow marginal band on the under hindwing, it is relatively distinctive.
At least I thought it was until someone who knows a lot more than me, Tim Cowles, looked at it and pronounced it a melanic Heath. Much more difference between to two upperwings as well as a distinctive underside combined with the fact it generally flies at a higher altitude in May or June and it is clearly one I got wrong. I shall leave the page up as a salutary lesson!
