This page has images of what I think is a Provencal Fritillary. This is one of the hardest to identify, in particular from Meadow Fritillary and Heath Fritillary or what used to be known as the Mellicta fritillaries.
My ID is based on the different coloured bands on the upperside and the upper forewing discal mark in s1 which is a broad H or dumbell shape. I also ponder if on the underside hindwing the inner black marginal line is formed of crescents rather than linear and tihs might be a feature.
Tim Cowles adds two helpful pointers 'On the upperside of the forewing there is a strong orange mark descending firmly into the base of the cell and only slightly scuffed with black in one corner, and this is preceded by a pair of roundish orange marks, one sitting atop the other. On the underside of the hindwing the central discal band is the same colour on both sides of the black line splitting it down the middle and this pale yellow colour is the same as the lower half of the palpi which are tipped with orange.'
As all too often I only identified this from the images after the event and so did not get as good images as I would like.
